Public Health England(PHE) has recently published a report in March 18 categorically confirming that the addition of fluoride to the water supply at the recommended dose of 1ppm is a safe and effective public health measure.
The report found that 5 year olds in fluoridated areas experienced much less decay than non fluoridated areas. Also fewer children had extractions in hospital and all children benefited especially those from deprived areas who suffer most from tooth decay.
At the moment only about 10% of the UK’s population live in a fluoridated area, the main areas being Birmingham and Newcastle.
Increasing this percentage would be a big step in improving the country’s dental health.
